I popped into a Starbucks yesterday morning because my three year-old needed to use the washroom before our Home Depot run. As we passed by their display rack it struck me how incredibly well designed their merchandise was. Simple products – coffee mugs, travel mugs and thermoses (the same as I sell everyday to my corporate clients) but the colors, designs and logos were extremely well done.
If you are a corporate buyer of promotional products, apparel, swag and gifts (and me as a supplier of them) the lesson is clear – use top-notch retailers as an inspiration on how to take your everyday products (mugs, hats, jackets, bags) to the next level. Observe how retailers use seasonal colors (not just black or browns) and innovative decoration (tone-on-tone, matte finishes, unique locations) to make their logo standout. If you are a corporate buyer demand more from your suppliers (like me) and don’t settle for the same old “left chest” logo application.
