Hands-up if your favourite SPORTS movie ever is 1993’s RUDY about Rudy Ruttiger of Notre Dame football infamy? Me too! Well, I’ve never been much to offer “Dad” advice to my daughter Sophie for her gymnastics career but I’m so glad I had RUDY to fall back on.
As each year passes and the stakes are raised, she is getting more determined and more nervous to hit specific gym goals. In just the past ten days she had two huge competitions that will define much of her next few years. On Jan 18 she debuted as a Senior National Team competitor at the 2023 Elite Canada comp. And, just yesterday she had a trials competition for the 2023 Canada Games.
As said, she was incredibly nervous, so I showed her the Iconic RUDY scene called Fortune’s Truth (Charles S. Dutton char.): “…In this lifetime, you don’t have to prove nothin’ to nobody – except yourself. And after what you’ve gone through, if you haven’t done that by now, it ain’t gonna never happen.” Simply put: success is a personal journey. It’s about proving to yourself that you can achieve what you set out to do. Don’t let external validation dictate what success means to you. Embrace the Fortune’s Truth and know that your own perception of your accomplishments is what truly matters. So, go out there and prove to yourself that you can succeed. You’ve got this.
I hope Sophie got great comfort and inspiration from this RUDY scene. I know I do (almost everyday). She finished 8th at the National competition (field of 27) and 1st for the Canada Games qualifier — she’s headed to PEI for the Canada Games next month!
